Andrew Soin is a bank teller who shot up his place of employment. He was triggered by one of the customers, Dana Burge, serving his teenage son Joey alcohol before he was put in a coma from a drunk driving crash. In the shooting, Soin killed Dana and injured two other people before he surrendered. The gun he used was purchased through a permit that he acquired after falsely reporting a mugging.
Soin represented himself and argued sympathy and systemic incompetence defenses, even breaking judicial procedure. His intention was to plead to second-degree manslaughter with the hopes of starting his life over after a light sentence, but his premeditation was proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Soin was found guilty of one count of murder and two counts of assault and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. (TBJ: "Bang & Blame")
