Dr. Arlen Rieff is a psychologist responsible for assisting in a "rebirthing" experiment in a child named Rosemary.
History[]
Rieff assisted Rita and Bud Gabler while they were trying to discipline Rosemary by instructing them for ten minutes over the phone about their twelve hours of the process. The girl was murdered from choking on her vomit as a result of the aggressive abuse. When the Gablers, as well as brutal child trafficker Ignatius Petty, were being tracked down to the properties used for the children, Rosemary was found dead and buried in the backyard of one filthy, littered, dangerously old illegal housing station.
Rieff was sold out by Petty's accomplice, Alma Cordoza. Rieff denied knowledge of Rosemary's death and said the experiment should be harmless usually, but he still gave up the Gablers to have them arrested for child abuse. At the trial, Rieff inadvertently made the case for the defense when they were trying to accuse the children of being more violent and abusive than the Gablers, saying the kids were too unhinged from coming from unloving homes. The Gablers were convicted of negligent homicide but would only serve two years in prison at most.
It is unclear what Rieff's status as a practicing doctor and his legal status ended up being. (SVU: "Cage")
