Claire Newbury is a reporter deeply invested in following the case of "The Infinity Rapist", a serial burglar-rape case involving couples being attacked at home which went cold years ago. She later became a victim of the same predator herself.
History[]
Years ago, she interviewed ADA Benjamin Stone on the infinity rapist. When another couple was attacked, the wife raped and the husband immobilized and threatened, the rapist, Karl Patton, was tracked.
However, Patton was guilty of attacking the couple, but wasn't The Infinity Rapist and just an unstable copycat falsely taking the credit. Newbury was back reporting on the case. She approached ADA Peter Stone, son of Benjamin Stone and asked what it was like for his father to work on the case, but he had nothing to tell her because his father never told him of the case.
She later had a live interview with Patton even when SVU squad knew Patton wasn't the rapist.
Unfortunately, The real Infinity Rapist witnessed the interview and was livid that Newbury said he was likely dead. He reacted by stalking and attacking Newbury and her husband Leo at their home. Although Newbury wanted to scream, Mike instructed her to let the crook do whatever he want so that they can survive. As a result, Newberry was forced to tie up her husband before she was raped by Infinity and threatened to pretend that she was enjoying it while her husband had dishes placed on him and was forced to listen. Newbury's assailant made his identity as Infinity clear, as he told her he was alive.
After the ordeal, the cops were called and paramedics took her husband to the hospital. At the precinct, Newbury confirmed the Infinity Rapist definitely raped her and pinned Leo down with dishes and binds, the M.O. almost uncanny. This time SVU was certain that it was the real rapist because he had the key detail that was left out of the papers: forcing his victims to feign enjoyment. Newbury also told the detectives it was an old man, corresponding with her initial description in her interview and worrying if he might return.
As her assailant used a condom, SVU worked hard to discover his identity, before running DNA left on old letters through a genealogy site. From this, Edgar Noone was revealed as the rapist when his niece, Amy Gardner, traced her family lines in a DNA genealogy test. When he was brought in, Newbury made a positive voice identification, but Noone's lawyer Roger Kressler had the evidence voided. However, Noone was arrested again for speeding tickets and was goaded into confessing by Peter Stone. Noone was arrested for Claire's rape and his other attacks, being sent to prison for the rest of his life. (SVU: "Dear Ben")
