Benson attempts to help a rape victim who is able to describe her attack but unable to identify her attacker in a line-up...

Plot[]

Benson does her best to help Harper Anderson, a rape victim who is able to describe her attack in perfect detail, yet unable to properly identify her attacker when push comes to shove. When the detectives revisit the case a few months later, they find Harper even less willing to talk about what happened, as she claims that she has moved on from it.

Benson and Detective Brian Cassidy spend the night together, because Benson just wanted one great night, but Cassidy is left wanting more than just one night -- he wants a serious relationship with Benson.

Quotes[]

Cassidy: I wanna see you again.
Benson: Um, Cassidy, we went to Maloney's, we got drunk and I wanted it to happen as much as you did, but that's all I wanted to happen.
Cassidy: This is about what happened at Harper's apartment, right?
Benson: No, no it's not...
Cassidy: My doubting... not doubting, but my questioning you and questioning Harper. That was just a job, it wasn't personal.
Benson: You know what? Neither was last night.

Stabler: How long you been sleeping with Cassidy?
Benson: Uh, I'm not.
Stabler: Your stomach just dropped two floors, Olivia. The unconscious does not lie.
Benson: I'm not lying. Not much.

Benson: He smells expensive.
Donald Cragen: Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I ask that you smell the defendant.

Harper Anderson: Who are you to tell me I'm not fine?!
Benson: Because closure is a myth!

Background information and notes[]

  • This episode concludes in the season two episode "Closure (Part II)".
  • Actress Tracy Pollan was nominated for an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Harper Anderson.
  • Harper Anderson, Tracy Pollan's character, was described as a 29-year-old, when Tracy Pollan was 39 years old at the time.
  • This is actor Rob Bartlett's first appearance as Milton Schoenfeld. He is uncredited for his appearance in this episode.
  • The one-night-stand between Detectives Benson and Cassidy will lead to several arguments in the following episodes, because Cassidy is left wanting more.
  • 'Goof: When Harper Anderson opens the door inward to her boyfriend's building, a camera, camera man, and boom mic are very clearly visible in the reflection on the door glass.
  • Goof: When Harper (the rape victim) is asked to describe the attacker, she says, "Tall"; when asked "How tall?" she says, "Tall-ish." But later, at the station, Benson shares the description and says the attacker was 5'8" -- which isn't tall by American standards (avg height for a man in the US is 5'9.5"), nor would a woman of Harper's height (5'6") consider a 5'8" man "tall."
