In the latter series, she played Leslie Abramson (a real life attorney who was also played by Ari Graynor in the Netflix show Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story).

She is perhaps most famous for her role as the titular character in Nurse Jackie, which aired from 2009 to 2015 with Peter Facinelli, Merritt Wever, Dominic Fumusa, Paul Schulze, Stephen Wallem, and Betty Gilpin. She also played Carmela Soprano in the HBO crime drama series The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007 (with Lorraine Bracco, Robert Iler, Michael Imperioli, and Vincent Pastore). She is also known for her role as Diane Whittlesey in HBO's prison drama Oz (1997–2000) with Christopher Meloni and Lee Tergesen.

In 2020, she appeared as LAPD Chief Abigail "Tommy" Thomas in the short-lived CBS crime drama Tommy (with Michael Chernus and Tonye Patano). She later starred in the third season of American Crime Story (with Sarah Paulson, Annaleigh Ashford, and Margo Martindale).
