Ellen Burstyn is an actress who portrays Bernadette Stabler on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Organized Crime. She won the 2009 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role on the SVU episode "Swing".

She was best known for her role as Chris MacNeil in The Exorcist (1973), earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. The film has remained popular and several publications have regarded it as one of the greatest horror films of all time. It was announced in July 2021, that Burstyn will reprise her role as Chris MacNeil for the first time since 1973, in the upcoming trilogy of sequels to The Exorcist (with Leslie Odom, Jr. and Ann Dowd). She also was nominated for the 1971 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Last Picture Show (with Cybill Shepherd and directed by Peter Bogdanovich). In 1974, Burstyn won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Alice Hyatt in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

Burstyn also starred on the TV show That's Life (with Paul Sorvino and Debi Mazar).

She is co-president of The Actors Studio with Alec Baldwin.
