Summary[]
After a child in a day-care center dies of a virus, Briscoe and Curtis try to find the source of the infection, leading to a case involving an extramarital affair, embezzlement and a drug manufacturer.
Plot[]
At the start of the episode, a day-care worker is seen waking up the preschoolers from naptime so they will go and play outside. When she reaches Ryan Downing, he won't wake up. She notices his sky-high temperature and immediately tells another person to call 911. Ryan dies.
It is discovered that Ryan died of a deadly virus known as VRSA. They retrace his steps for the day he was most likely infected, but nothing comes up, meaning it was unlikely he just caught the disease from someone. Then, in a shocking discovery, a tiny puncture wound is found on his left thigh indicating Ryan was injected with the drug.
They later find another person, a heroin junkie in rehab, that apparently has also died from VRSA. Going through his personal effects, they find the reason he died was that he was still using drugs and probably used an infected needle. They trace the needle to the garbage bins outside an apartment building. The needle had traces of VRSA as well as Ryan Downing's blood. It's the same strain of VRSA that infected the junkie and Ryan.
The detectives screen everyone in the building and find that a woman named Theresa works for the same company as Aaron Downing, Ryan's father, but they deny knowing each other. However, it is revealed that Aaron not only knows Theresa, but she has also been his mistress for the past six months. Theresa says that she and Aaron have something special and he's going to leave his wife, whilst Aaron insists that she was just something on the side. Not only that, but Theresa and Aaron have been embezzling money from their company. Aaron has been keeping most of it, $350,000, whilst Theresa only got $100,000. It would appear that Aaron is deceiving both his wife and his mistress.
Using a few witnesses around the area, they find Aaron was in Theresa's apartment building a short time after Ryan got infected and could have disposed of the needle there. They arrest him when they see him in a car and find that he was planning to flee to Fiji. He insists that he would never kill his little boy, but his wife says to the detectives that Aaron had been depressed and when she thought she was pregnant with another child, he freaked out and said, "It is better to let kids never see the light of day so they don't end up miserable like us."
McCoy is unable to get proof that Aaron was in possession of the VRSA in time for an indictment, so the judge releases Aaron on his own recognizance.
The prosecution has already narrowed down the biological company that supplied the virus, Allgen. It would appear that their screening process for who they supply their viruses to is less than rigorous. An employee who pointed this out got fired and agrees to testify to the grand jury. When the Allgen purchase order is located, it implicates Aaron Downing as the buyer and the grand jury indicts him.
Aaron flees but is spotted at a motel in New Jersey. They find that he has hanged himself and therefore cannot be prosecuted for his son's murder.

- Rey Curtis: Just do it.
