IMDb profile

Jonathan Kimble Simmons is an actor who is best known for his portrayal of Dr. Emil Skoda in all three primary shows of the Law & Order franchise. Before he became a recurring character, he played Jerry Luppin in the Law & Order Season 4 episode "Sanctuary".

Simmons is also known as the sadistic prison inmate Vernon Schillinger on the prison drama Oz (with Kirk Acevedo, Ernie Hudson, Christopher Meloni, Rita Moreno, Harold Perrineau, Lee Tergesen, Dean Winters, B.D. Wong, Lance Reddick, Kathryn Erbe, and Mike Doyle). He also played the obsessively egotistical newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson (a character also played by Ed Asner in the 1994 Spider-Man animated series) in all three of the original Spider-Man trilogy of movies (with Elizabeth Banks in all 3 and Alfred Molina in Spider-Man 2) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home (again with Molina and with Benedict Wong) as well as the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man. He also starred as Ralph Earnhardt, the father of famous race-car driver Dale Earnhardt, in 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story. He has been praised for his portrayal of Mac McGuff, Juno's father, in Juno (with Jennifer Garner and Allison Janney). He went on to play the Assistant Chief of the LAPD, Will Pope, in The Closer from 2005 to 2012. Simmons won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 2014 film Whiplash (with Melissa Benoist).

Simmons has also done voice work, lending his voice to shows such as Invincible (with Steven Yeun), Phineas and Ferb, Kim Possible, Ben 10: Alien Force, American Dad, Justice League, and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. He has also voiced characters in animated movies such as Aliens in the Attic and Megamind. His voice can also be heard as Cave Johnson in Valve's video game series Portal.

He also serves as a commercial spokesperson for Farmers Insurance as well as the voice of the Yellow M&M in various commercials for the candy.

Like many of his Law & Order co-stars, he also appeared in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street, though he portrayed a criminal suspect, Alexander Rausch, rather than his Dr. Skoda character. The Season 4 episode "For God and Country" crossed over with Law & Order before Simmons joined the cast as Skoda.
