Detective Jalen Shaw is a Junior Detective with the Manhattan North Homicide Squad in the 27th Precinct, reporting to Lieutenant Kate Dixon and later Lieutenant Jessica Brady. He was partnered with Detective Frank Cosgrove and is currently partnered with Detective Vincent Riley. He is the replacement for Detective Kevin Bernard, who departed from the squad.
Background[]
Shaw graduated from NYU Law School and practiced law for three years, but decided it wasn't for him and became a police officer instead. He had worked in the Narcotics Division for five years before becoming a Homicide Detective in the 32nd Precinct. (OC: "Gimme Shelter")
As a Homicide Detective[]
He had only been working in homicide for five months when he is assigned to investigate when a young girl named Ava Marchenko is murdered in the middle of a street by Mark Sirenko. He meets Detective Frank Cosgrove at the scene, as he was there having a meal with his daughter Lily at a cafe nearby. (OC: "Gimme Shelter")
After working with Cosgrove on this case, he officially transfers to the 27th Precinct and becomes his new partner. (L&O: "Battle Lines")
Shaw reveals to his colleagues during a case that his parents both served in the military and that his father was killed during his service. (L&O: "Chain Of Command")
Shaw was assaulted, harassed and arrested by two police officers in the streets who pulled their guns out on him. Despite Cosgrove stating he worked with Shaw and that they were both police officers, the two arresting officers did not stop what they were doing and continued to arrest Shaw. When one of the arresting officers, Wagner, went to visit Shaw to apologize with a gift, Shaw refused to listen to Wagner or accept the gift. Wagner told Shaw that he was trying to become a detective and threatened Shaw that it would not end well for him. A furious Wagner retaliated by filing a complaint against Shaw for not following orders. As a result Shaw was suspended for a week with pay despite Shaw's claims that Wagner and his partners actions were racism motivated as well as Wagner's threats. (L&O: "Fear And Loathing")
