He famously voiced Mufasa in the 1994 animated film The Lion King (with Jeremy Irons and Whoopi Goldberg) and its 2019 CGI/live-action remake, and Darth Vader from the Star Wars franchise. He reprised his Darth Vader voice in the 2005 animated film Robots (with Robin Williams, Will Denton, Stephen Tobolowsky, Natasha Lyonne, and Darin De Paul) as a voice box in a hardware store.
Jones also starred in the theatre and film versions of The Great White Hope (with Jane Alexander) and the play Fences (with Mary Alice and Courtney B. Vance), both of which he won Tony Awards for. He also appeared in the baseball films Field of Dreams and The Sandlot (with Tom Guiry). Other famous film roles include James Greer in the Jack Ryan film series (a character later played by Wendell Pierce in the TV series), starting with The Hunt for Red October (with Alec Baldwin) and as King Jaffe Joffer in the film Coming to America and its sequel Coming 2 America.
He was also the husband of actress Cecilia Hart, who guest-starred on three episodes of Law & Order including "Profile".
