Jamie Whelan was an NYPD detective with the Manhattan Organized Crime Control Bureau, replacing Victoria Cho and Carlos Maldonado.

History[]

Whelan joined the Organized Crime Control Bureau in 2022, with Ayanna Bell telling Stabler that Whelan reminded her of him. He later joined Stabler outside Henry Cole's apartment after he fell out of a window in what appeared to be a murder.

When an officer acts hostile towards Stabler, Whelan attempts to stand up for Stabler, but Stabler stops him before anything happens. He is later assaulted by Kenny Kyle after Kenny attempts to flee from the police, but Whelan is helped by Slootmaekers, who shows concern for him. (OC: "Everybody Knows The Dice Are Loaded")

Whelan and Stabler meet with a woman named Dede Hayes, who had a falling out with Kenny. After finding out that she planned to meet with Kenny, Whelan and Stabler track Dede's phone but they accidentally go to the wrong house, finding out that Dede dumped her phone there. Whelan and Stabler finally find the right house, where they find Dede's body as well as two hitmen. (OC: "Catch Me If You Can")

After Polson falls out of a window after being shot by Stabler, Whelan is shot in the shoulder but the shot wound is minor and Whelan quickly recovers from it. (OC: "Last Christmas")

Whelan goes undercover to infiltrate a gang after a woman is kidnapped by them. The gang primarily consisted of street car racers, which was Whelan's former career before becoming a police officer. He is arrested while on the job alongside Cristobal Ruiz, but both men are released from police custody and Whelan is taken to Antonio Duran, one of the gang members. (OC: "Trap")

All the gang members that Whelan goes undercover is infiltrate are eventually arrested, with the exception of Antonio Duran, who is murdered by Bernanda Menendez. (OC: "The Infiltration Game")

During a search, Whelan is shot in the neck by Kyle Wilkie. An FBI field medic rushes to save Whelan and helps briefly, but Wilkie stabs himself and the medic has to leave Whelan and save Wilkie. Eventually, Whelan is rushed to the hospital to undergo surgery, but he is put on life support as the bullet went through his spine. Reyes stayed by Whelan's bedside the whole time and met Whelan's father who came to visit him in the hospital. Unfortunately, Whelan dies from his injuries, devastating the OCCB team. Before his death, Whelan had asked Bobby Reyes to disconnect a box attached to his neck that was sending shocks to his nerves just so that Whelan could breathe, not wanting to live in his paralyzed state. Reyes had refused and then his father came to visit him. The device was noticeably disconnected when Whelan flatlined, suggesting that his father may have complied with his request to die in the end. (OC: "With Many Names")

Personality[]

Just like Stabler, Whelan has a short temper and is prone to getting angry quickly. He also has a strong hatred for dirty cops and doesn't appreciate any officers criticizing or belittling his work or any of his fellow officers from his department's work. He is also overly eager to work, which raises concerns with his coworkers, particularly Slootmaekers.

Trivia[]

  • Whelan was a streetcar racer before he joined the academy. His past allowed him to go undercover as a street car racer to infiltrate a gang. (OC: "Trap")
