Joanne Ellis is an assault victim of schizophrenic killer and stalker James Smith. While in a vintage clothing store owned by Irving Marks, Smith barged in to attack a woman he was harassing. In a psychotic break, he killed Marks the woman he stalked, and the cashier, before Joanne came out of the dressing room and Smith hit her head with his weapon, a bayonet.

Joanne, narrowly survived, but was left with a dislocated shoulder, an injured eye, and brain damaged so bad she had to learn to speak and walk again. She was still in good enough condition to provide an accurate ID of Smith in a lineup. Her husband Frank sued Kincaid and the D.A.'s office on Joanne's belief along with the other victims' families, as Smith was released on his own recognizance on Kincaid's watch. Joanne, in better shape, testified at Smith's trial, under which Smith, representing himself, used the lawsuit to make Joanne protest she held Kincaid responsible. (L&O: "Pro Se")
