Joseph "Joe" Blaine was a prime suspect in the murders of two students at his school. He was assumed to be a victim from a shot grazing his head, but a disturbed graphic drawing depicting the murders and revealing the gunshot was self-inflicted proved Joe's guilt. He gave an unhinged confession in interrogation in a psychotic break and was charged.

When the psychiatric drug Aptral was revealed to have diminished Joe's capacity, his mother Sandra admitted to administering it when she received it in the mail. From this, an official, Dean Reynolds, at the company responsible for incessantly sending it, Tauscher-Leto Pharmaceuticals, was arrested for criminal provocation and reckless endangerment. ADA Alexandra Cabot offered a deal to Joe where he would pled guilty to second degree manslaughter and be institutionalized to receive the help that he needed for his problems. Although Cabot likely could've won the trial, she was sympathetic with Joe's situation and pointed out that if Joe won, he would've just been sent back into the same bad situation where Joe wouldn't get the help that he needed. Stating that he wanted to get better, Joe accepted the deal. (SVU: "Manic")
