John Spencer was an actor who played Howard Morton in the Law & Order pilot episode "Prescription for Death".
Spencer was best known for his role as Leo McGarry, the White House Chief of Staff on the NBC political drama The West Wing (with Allison Janney, Joshua Malina, Janel Moloney, and Bradley Whitford), for which he won an Emmy Award. He also starred as Tommy Mullaney on L.A. Law (with Corbin Bernsen and Blair Underwood).
He died following a heart attack in a Los Angeles hospital on December 16, 2005, four days before his 59th birthday.
