Johnny was a troubled young boy, whose mother, Lana, owned a gun that his uncle gave her. Although instructed not to go near the gun case, he got into it anyway. At one point, Johnny took the gun to school and showed it to Danny Koehler.
When the school Johnny and Danny were at was shot up by, which caused Danny to be injured Danny told Detective Olivia Benson that Johnny told him he owned a gun. Johnny was not present because he was running late, so stayed home. Detectives John Munch and several other police officers went to the Mayhew residence to see if Johnny was the shooter. After talking to Lana, she was outraged that he disobeyed her order and nearly slapped him but Det. Odafin Tutuola prevented it and warned her not to make it worse. However, Lana asserted that Johnny couldn't be the shooter looking at the gun Johnny owned the police knew that Johnny could not be the shooter as the gun Johnny was a pistol rather than the high-powered rifle used in the shooting.
