Detective Jorge Rivas is an investigator in the LAPD Gang Unit assigned to the case of the Moon Bay Crew murdering pro surfer and medical cannabis seller Trevor Knight. He was originally called for consultation on Joey Fatu, Trevor's silent partner, being a suspect due to being a member of the Sons of Samoa. Fatu was eventually proven innocent, and the Crew was arrested.
Detective Rivas was called at the crew's preliminary hearing to argue to the judge its legitimate classification as a gang. He elaborated California legally defines a gang as at least three members that commit crimes as primary activities, such as the Crew beating a teen and two of the members making the third rape a girl who was lured to one of the members' houses. They have their own name and sign, as well as defended their own territory. Under cross examination, defense attorney Sarah Whitmer asked Detective Rivas if the trio primarily surfed above all, and he admitted that was more recorded for the courts than their gang activities.
However, the judge supported the prosecution's argument and classified the Crew as a gang, ready to try them under such statutes. Because of this, Gray Campbell, the father and enabler of one member, took a plea to testify against the gang, and all members pleaded out to Trevor's murder. (LA: "Harbor City")
