On January 13, 2023, Sands was reported missing while hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles, California. On June 24, hikers discovered human remains, which were subsequently recovered; three days later, the remains were confirmed to be that of Sands. The cause of death was undetermined due the state of the remains.
