Laura Bauer is the granddaughter of Mildred Bauer, whom she’s suspected of killing by starving her to death. Laura is originally suspected to have killed her out of greed, as Mildred tried to deport her and their former housekeeper Maria Gonzalez broke into their home to check on Mildred, which is why Laura pinned the blame on her after firing her.
It’s revealed Mildred made funeral arrangements and spoke with her local priest, as she killed herself by starvation due to her growing sicker, and Laura covered for her so she might be buried on consecrated burial grounds.
