Law and Order

Laura Bergreen is the killer of Richard Spiegel, her sister Kate’s husband and an employee at their family’s business.

History[]

Laura and Kate were co-CEOs of their father Seymour’s department store franchise, Richard being appointed CFO once he married Kate. Laura disastrously handled the company’s finances, which left the business near bankruptcy and her job bound to be a goner. Richard knew full well from his position. Kate coincidentally had her own problems with Richard, as she had an affair with fashion designer Paul Medici, and Richard was planning to divorce her and take their kids while leaving the family paying support and alimony.

Agreeing to erase Richard to save face, the sisters plotted to kill him, Kate giving her gun to Laura so Laura would pull the trigger. They were tried for murder consequentially, but Kate got an immunity deal so Laura would be convicted, her motives being more substantial for the case. However, Seymour threw the prosecution entirely off course by switching his alibi for Kate to be in favor of Laura, which he admitted out of court was utter perjury to save his family. Laura, nevertheless, was acquitted as a result of the confusion. (L&O: "Family Business")
