Lois Smith is an actress who guest-starred on all four primary shows of the Law & Order franchise.
Elsewhere, she had a recurring role as Gracie on ER and starred on HBO's True Blood as Gran Adele Stackhouse (with Chris Bauer, Lynn Collins, Ryan Kwanten, Carrie Preston, Adina Porter, and Michael Raymond-James). She has been nominated twice for the Tony Award for "Best Actress (Featured)"; the first time was in 1990 for her performance in The Grapes of Wrath, and the second was in 1996 for her performance in Sam Shepard's Buried Child. She also starred in the film Lady Bird (with Timothée Chalamet).
She is also an ordained minister and once taught acting at Juilliard. She studied acting with Lee Strasburg at the Actor's Studio, and is a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. She was also the long time partner of actor David Margulies, who had guest-starred on Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
