Michael Wayland is a meth addict and the accomplice of Justin Smolka in the murder of Detective Nick Carvahal.

History[]

Wayland's father abused him until committing suicide when Wayland was ten. His mother ended up in psychiatric commitment, and his sister cared for her until she died two years prior to the events of the episode. He grew up with a man childish personality and eventually adopted a rottweiler for company. Wayland had a gun used in a nightclub shooting, but it was unconfirmed if he was the shooter. He knew Smolka, a rapper and the husband of actress Sky Sweet, from shared addictions to and dealing of meth.

Smolka solicited Whelan to be a getaway driver for when Smolka burglarized the flat of paparazzo Gary Blanchard, Whelan loaning him the gun in his possession. Smolka shot Detective Carvahal, one of the neighbors investigating the burglary, and fled with Wayland, but without what he was looking for. Wayland was eventually tracked and had to call off his dog when he started barking from the door being knocked on. Cassidy knew him from her previous assignments, so she interrogates him, albeit condescendingly, but enough with Wayland being afraid of losing his pet and family, he confessed to his involvement in the murder.

In spite of Smolka trying to place the blame on Wayland, enough evidence convinced Smolka to take a plea. Wayland eventually received a sentence of eight years in prison for accessory to murder. (L&O: "Fame")
