Miriam Burdett is a Ugandan child who was held captive and repeatedly raped by child soldier general Joseph Serumaga. She escaped to America and closely bonded with Elijah Okello, a former and remorseful child soldier, at the church he volunteered at. Although Miriam didn't remember her life before the refugee camp she lived in, it came back to her when Miriam spotted Serumaga at a wedding. Miriam conspired with Elijah to have him kill Serumaga. The plan backfired when Elijah left her in a bodega to find Serumaga in his apartment, but her throat was slashed by Serumaga and she was left for dead. She lived through the attack, but was only able to identify her attacker as "the Devil" as she never knew Segumara's real name. Elijah was originally suspected of being the perpetrator, but after he prayed with Detective Elliot Stabler, Elijah told Stabler the full story. Stabler and ADA Cabot were able to identify Serumaga who was also known as "the Devil of Gulu" which was why Miriam had called him the Devil. Serumaga was arrested by Stabler and extradited to be tried by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, ensuring that all of his victims and not just Miriam got justice.

However, Elijah took hostages from fearing being deported to face charges as a child soldier. When she saw Elijah step outside, then commit suicide by cop, she heard his last words, which was whispering to her that he had to die so the world would know the bane of child soldier recruitment.
