Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the murder of a pharmaceutical company executive found cut in half in midtown.
Plot[]
Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the murder of a pharmaceutical company executive, Clayton Sherwood. Sherwood was found chopped in half and stuffed in his suitcase to be shipped back to Bangkok. There is a tan line on his wrist, indicating that the killer removed Sherwood’s watch. They found his hotel room ransacked and there was an attempt to open the safe. The safe contains documents and a gold watch, but the watch does not match with Sherwood’s tan line.
Prior to that, Dr. Pirapan, a Bangkok doctor specialising in hemophilia, was treating an 8 year old with the disease who subsequently became infected with HIV. Dr. Pirapan suspected that the Factor VIII administered to the boy was the source of the HIV infection and informed the drug distributor, who then informed Clayton Sherwood, which was Head of Sales for Southeast Asia for Clarendon Pharmaceuticals.
Due to a malfunctioning heater, about $15 million of human plasma-derived Factor VIII clotting factor were not cleared of HIV. Those vials should have been destroyed after the senior corporate office was notified and had approved of their destruction. Later, those tainted vials were being shipped to Thailand where there was an HIV epidemic to be used as a cover for the illegal HIV-tainted Factor VIII sales. However, after the manufacturing mishap, Clarendon Pharmaceuticals stopped selling human-derived clotting factor (white labelled vials) and started selling synthetic clotting factor (green labelled vials). The tainted vials being sold in 2004 in Thailand were labelled with green labels, thereby passing HIV-tainted human-derived Factor VIII as synthetic ones.
Bernard Mailer, Steve Johannsen, and Sherwood are all involved in the HIV-tainted Factor VIII scandal, deception, and cover-up. On the other hand, Gordon Buchanan, the Head of Blood Products division of Clarendon Pharmaceuticals, was unaware of the tainted Factor VIII vials until Det. Goren informed him.
Eric Dunlow, Buchanan's administrative secretary, is actually Brian Welton. He has assumed the identity of Eric Dunlow. The real Eric Dunlow was a gay college yachtsman that had overdosed on MDMA and remains in a semi-vegetative state. The fake Eric Dunlow is presently employed at Clarendon Pharmaceuticals as Gordon, and the gold watch served as evidence that Brian slept with women, unlike the real Eric Dunlow.
Sherwood blackmailed Brian/fake Eric to get him to plant a floppy disk containing false information into Buchanan's computer. The information would implicate Buchanan in the tainted Factor VIII scandal, and Sherwood intended to use it later as a leverage. However, Brian refused and killed Sherwood instead. Det. Goren used this intuition to trick Brian into revealing that he was indeed trying to open Sherwood’s safe not only to retrieve the diskette, but also the gold watch that would reveal his identity theft.
