The Neighborhood Stabilization Unit is a patrol division with a toxic racist culture that resulted in the lynching of black auxiliary officer and deliverymen Floyd Michaels by an instructor and several beat cops. Other cops covered for the crimes with lies and denial, which failed. Citations were poorly followed up on, and the city refused retirement when the officers were done with police work, contributing to their rage.
Frank Dietrich, Fratelli, and Carlson were convicted of murder, Dietrich and Fratelli being sentenced to death, while Carlson took a plea to life without parole. Gil Sawchuck faced unspecified penalties for diverting the investigation. (L&O: “DWB”)
