Paul Crandall is the ex-boyfriend of murdered deaf college student Kathy McKenna. He was a serious suspect due to his possessive nature, and his resentments over Kathy leaving him for a hearing man and planning on a cochlear implant operation.
Paul was investigated due to threats Kathy received in texts, but they were revealed to have been from a hearing suspect. The harasser was Dr. Gordon Bryce, the leader of the Bryce Institute, which Kathy partnered with, and her killer, Bryce losing it over her moving to California. Bryce sent the messages to frame Paul and cast suspicion on him.
