Pence Humphreys was a neurologist and author with dementia who wrongfully-confessed to the murder of his wife Winifred.

Background[]

When Pence was 10 years old, he met a young Winifred after she helped him win a spelling bee. He fell in love with her after she revealed her admiration for him and his writing talent. In 1983, he and Winifred got married and moved in together where they began a whole new chapter of their lives. In 2003, Pence started developing dementia which was evident when Winifred told him that they needed to get ready for his ceremony as he was being awarded a prize.

King of the Moon[]

While Pence was sleeping, Pence heard a noise and woke up but Winifred said that it was nothing. After Pence asked Winifred if she was cheating on him, Winifred told him that he will always be her king of the moon. After Winifred was found raped and murdered, Pence convinced himself that he murdered her and confessed to Benson that he killed her. Benson started investigating the case and Pence struggled with complications from dementia throughout, causing him to slit his wrists at one point and start flirting with Benson.

Benson attempts to try to get Pence to realize that his wife is dead and to tell her the truth after Pence starts lying to her on multiple occasions. Eventually, Kevin Wise was arrested for Winifred's murder where Kevin claimed that he didn't mean to kill Winifred and that he didn't rape her. Benson then attempts to get him to confess, and Kevin confesses to Winifred's rape and murder, ultimately acquitting Pence.
