Pennsylvania highlighted on an USA map.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is a state located in the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic regions of the United States of America. Pennsylvania was one of the original 13 colonies. The state borders Delaware and Maryland to the south, West Virginia to the southwest, Ohio to the west, New York and Canada to the north, and New Jersey to the east.

During the American Civil War, the city of Gettysburg served as the turning point of the war when the Union Army severely defeated the Confederate Army from July 1-3, 1863, ending with the famous Pickett's Charge. It was the bloodiest battle on American soil, costing 50,000 lives.

On September 11, 2001, four Islamic terrorists hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 with the intention of crashing it into either the White House or the Capital Building in Washington D.C. After learning of the previous attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the passengers attempted to take down the hijackers. The hijacker pilot, Ziad Jarrah, crashed the plane in a field in Pennsylvania as the passengers broke into the cockpit and fought for control of the plane. All 43 on board died in the crash.
