Peter Coyote (born Robert Peter Cohon on October 10, 1941) is an actor who played three different characters in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and Law & Order: LA.
He is best known for his work in various films such as the mysterious scientist "Keys" in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (with Dee Wallace and Henry Thomas). Cross Creek (1983), Jagged Edge (1985), Patch Adams (1998 with Robin Williams, Bob Gunton, and Philip Seymour Hoffman), Erin Brockovich (2000 with Julia Roberts), and A Walk to Remember. He also starred on the show The 4400 (with Joel Gretsch, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Patrick Flueger, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Laura Allen, and Billy Campbell).
