His parents were both deaf, and as such he was well versed in sign language, and often used as an interpreter when the deaf were being interviewed by police.
He took great care to respect their rights, refusing to observe them when consulting with their attorneys. He felt this would be a violation of their rights. He also took great care to respect the privacy of the deaf by refusing to interpret their conversations unless there was no expectation of privacy.
