Philip Seymour Hoffman was an Oscar-winning actor who portrayed Steven Hanauer, one of the co-defendants in the season one Law & Order episode, "The Violence of Summer". This was his first credited acting role.
Hoffman won a Best Actor Oscar for his titular role as Truman Capote in the film Capote (with Amy Ryan). He also appeared in the films Patch Adams (with Robin Williams, Peter Coyote, and Bob Gunton), Mission: Impossible III (with Michelle Monaghan), and The Hunger Games film series (with Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Elizabeth Banks, Paula Malcomson, and Jena Malone).
Hoffman died on February 2, 2014, at the age of 46 in the West Village of New York City from a drug overdose. He had relapsed for a couple of years after a long road of recovery and sobriety.
