When Luca Gabardelli was caught having sex with another schoolteacher, Natalie Relais, Natalie told Luca to blame Simms for molestation. Luca went to his father, Ray Gabardelli, with the allegation, and Ray paid members of BX9 to brutalize and then sodomize Simms like they had been doing to other gay men.
When Detectives Benson and Amaro looked into Luca's claims, they realized the facts fail to add up, and eventually got Ray to confess to arranging for Simms' assault. When the detectives realized the truth about Natalie, Rick is exonerated. (SVU: "Learning Curve")
