Romania is a republic in Eastern Europe. The Kingdom of Romania was an affiliate member of the Axis Powers of World War II.

The Socialist Republic of Romania was established in 1947 until 1989. During this time, the Securitate, the secret police, was one of the most brutal secret police forces in the world behind Nazi Germany's Gestapo and the Soviet Union's KGB, responsible for the arrests, torture and deaths of thousands of people.

During the 1980s, Nicholas Iliescu was a member of the Securitate. He beat, tortured and killed many prisoners and had his son, Leon Iliescu learn how to do so. (L&O: "Securitate")

Ilena Codrescu and her aunt Constanta Codrescu were from Romania. (SVU: "Slaves")
