Sarah Catherine Paulson is an actress who played Maggie Conner in the Law & Order Season 5 episode "Family Values". This is her first known acting job.

She also played spoiled heiress and murderer Anne Gillette, in the Law & Order: SVU Season 11 episode "Shadow".

Paulson was a series regular on the cult television show American Gothic and the WB series Jack & Jill (with Amanda Peet and Justin Kirk), playing the character Elisa Cronkite. In addition, she had a minor role in the HBO series Deadwood, and was a focal character in an episode of the critically acclaimed FX series Nip/Tuck.

In the 2006-2007 television season, Paulson co-starred in NBC's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (again with Peet, Timothy Busfield, Nathan Corddry, Bradley Whitford, and Steven Weber) playing Harriet Hayes, one of the stars of the show-within-a-show, earning her a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress in a TV series.

Starting in 2011, Sarah Paulson has starred in the critically acclaimed horror anthology American Horror Story created by Glee helmers Brad Falchuck and Ryan Murphy with Dylan McDermott, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Chloë Sevigny, Alexandra Breckenridge, Kate Mara, and Denis O'Hare. The second season of the series garnered her an Emmy nomination for playing the emotionally/sexually abused lesbian journalist Lana Winters. For her performances in the series, she received five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won two Critics' Choice Television Awards.

She began filming 12 Years a Slave in 2012 as the manipulative and icy Mistress Epps, beating out many notable A-list actresses for the juicy role. The film won Best Picture at the 2013 Academy Awards.

Paulson was universally praised for her portrayal of former Los Angeles County Assistant District Attorney Marcia Clark in the 2016 F/X series The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (with Courtney B. Vance and Christian Clemenson), for which she garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including the Primetime Emmy Award and the Golden Globe Award. In 2020, Paulson appeared in the FX limited series Mrs. America, and began starring as Nurse Mildred Ratched in the Netflix psychological thriller series Ratched (with Cynthia Nixon, Sharon Stone, Finn Wittrock, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, and Vincent D'Onofrio).

In January 2020, she confirmed that she will return as two characters Tuberculosis Karen and Mamie Eisenhower in American Horror Story: Double Feature for its tenth season, after being absent for the ninth season.

She is close friends with Pedro Pascal, Oscar Isaac, and Amanda Peet.
