Quotes[]
- Jack McCoy: Never get Freudian with a man with a pickle.
- Serena Southerlyn: It's called "res ipsa loquitor", Mr. Bergen. I'm sure your attorney will explain it to you.
- Attorney: It's Italian hocus pocus for "they get a belly full of bupkes".
- Serena Southerlyn: Actually, it's Latin for "two half-naked people in an apartment are probably not there to play Scrabble".
- Lennie Briscoe: (arriving at the crime scene) So, Dr. Brody, tell me the story.
- Dr. Brody: What we got here is one very dead lady.
- Lennie Briscoe: You went to school for that?
- Dr. Brody: Made mom proud.
Background information and notes[]
- Green makes a comment about all of Briscoe's children being grown, though he quickly apologizes for that comment. This is due to the death of one of Briscoe's daughters, Cathy Briscoe, which happened in the season 8 episode "Damaged".
- Briscoe makes a joke about being unable to record the TV show Sex and the City, which had prominently featured actor Chris Noth (who played his partner Mike Logan) in his recurring role as John James "Mr. Big" Preston.
- "Res ipsa loquitur" is Latin for "the thing speaks for itself". It is a common doctrine in tort law used to meet the burden of proof based on circumstantial evidence, declaring that the occurrence of an accident implies negligence. Serena however, seems to be using the term more literally, the way one might say "if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it's probably a duck."
- With the first-run telecast of "Shangri-La," its 279th episode, Law & Order surpassed the original Hawaii Five-O as TV's longest-running crime drama in prime-time, breaking a record that stood for 22 years.
