Shawn's biological father was an abusive man who would often beat his mother in front of him and his brother. He also showed little interest in his sons. Eventually, his father tried to kill his mother but was arrested and imprisoned.
Shawn and his family went to live in a shelter for a while until a man named Walt Massey answered an ad that his mother put in the newspaper. Massey took them into his home after marrying Shawn's mother and legally adopted Shawn and Darren.
Shawn was close to Massey with them often spending time together and Massey coaching his baseball team or playing video games like most boys do. However, Massey was a pedophile and predator who was grooming Shawn. One night, Massey went into his room and molested Shawn while telling him not to tell his mother because Massey saw it as a form of love and used Shawn's fear of being sent back to the shelter.

Eventually, SVU discovered Walt was the culprit in a murder of another pedophile. They also uncover his rape of Shawn and told his horrified mother. They bring Shawn to the precinct, with Detective Elliot Stabler having Shawn open up about his stepfather as Shawn was reluctant to come forward about his abuse. Eventually, Stabler asked him if he was touched inappropriately by Massey, and he confesses it all while stating he didn't want to go back to the shelter. Hearing this, his watching mother was devastated by this news and hugged him to comfort him. After Walt was brought in, Shawn and his mother looked at him, with Walt giving Shawn a predatory and curious smile, which made Shawn wince with fear and discomfort while his mother stared at him, disgusted and upset. While being interrogated by Stabler, the latter found that he had a tattoo that belonged to the man in a video with Jansen. Because of Shawn's confession and confirmation that Walt committed murder, he was convicted and imprisoned.
