Summary[]
After a dating service called Speed Encounters is linked to three rapes, Benson goes undercover at the dating service to ferret out the rapist, and she meets Dr. Mike Jergens, a surgeon who enjoys controlling the women in his life. The detectives talk to his girlfriend, Cora Kennison, who turns out to be alcoholic and bulimic. Jergens is represented by Minerva Grahame-Bishop. Judge Elizabeth Donnelly throws out the evidence against Jergens, ruling a search of his apartment unconstitutional, and Novak has to find another way to go after him.
Shortly after testifying in the grand jury hearing, Cora opts to marry Jergens in the hope that spousal privilege will keep her from having to take the stand during the trial, but since the rapes occurred before they got married, she still has to testify. Distraught, Cora drinks to excess, leaving her in a vegetative state with irreversible brain damage. Jergens fights her mother, Virginia, to unplug her feeding tube.
