Steve had a consensual relationship with Lisa Faber who believed they were in love.
When one of his students, Shannon Coyle, was found dead, Special Victims Unit Detectives Stabler and Benson question him on the last time he saw her. He explains rehearsal went until 5 o'clock and while he didn't know where she went afterward, he said her friend Lisa Faber might know.
Much later, the detectives found one of his keys in Shannon's purse along with condoms. The detectives use the key to unlock Steve's apartment, where Benson and Stabler find Steve having sex with none other than Shannon's best friend, Lisa and condoms matching the ones Shannon had. Back at the precinct, Olivia confronts Lisa with the evidence and Lisa confesses that she gave Shannon the key. Steve also admits to the relationship with Lisa but denies murdering Shannon to keep her quiet and reveals an alibi: he had a meeting that evening.
Steve was subsequently imprisoned for statutory rape.
