The Special Victims Unit must contend with a neighborhood vigilante group while pursing a serial rapist.

Plot[]

A string of rapes in West Soho inspires a group of vigilantes to organize against both neighborhood crime and the NYPD. Even as the reporter Dennis Griscomb takes every opportunity for publicly subjecting police efforts to hostile criticism, the SVU squad struggles to find a lead in the case until one of the vigilantes is attacked.

As the other detectives fight for control over the investigation and angry citizens, Amaro is distracted by the suspicion that his wife is seeing another man.

Eventually the rapist proves to be one of the vigilante group's members, who was doing all he had done to stay close to the woman he loved--a woman who had no feelings, beyond friendship, for him.

Meanwhile, Amaro's wife proves, not to be having an affair, but instead to have been seeing a psychiatrist in secret.

Quotes[]

County Clerk: You want me to match a Metro card to a Board of Ed employee? I don't have time for that. A hundred thirty-five thousand people work here.
Rollins: Well, it's a police matter, so you'll have to make time.
County Clerk: Excuse me, all I have to do is stay black and die.

Rollins: [to a group of undercover female cops] Check out doorways and vestibules as you pass. He likes to attack from behind. And be careful in those spikes. Makes it harder if you gotta run or kick somebody in the balls.

Leslie Adams: I was just trying to prevent other women from being raped.
Benson: I understand that, but you really need to leave that to the police.
Leslie Adams: hat hasn't worked, has it?
Benson: Well, this didn't work, did it?

Dennis Griscomb: [to Amaro] Detective, do you have any leads?
Amaro: Me? You're the one withholding evidence. You care to comment?

[after Maria bursts into the squad room to confront Amaro]
Munch: That right there is why I stopped marrying Italian women.

Background information and notes[]

  • Andy Chen claims to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and he gets out on bail because the church paid it for him. However, Witnesses have very strict beliefs and standards, and he is flagrantly violating a number of them. He curses, fraternizes with other people who are not Witnesses (which they do not allow), and he admits to regularly having sex with different women, which Witnesses consider a very serious sin. Someone doing these things would be disfellowshipped from the organization (their version of excommunication), which means the Watchtower Society (the non-profit company that represents Witnesses) would never pay for his bail or legal fees.
