The State of Texas is a southern state of the United States of America, the second-largest after Alaska. After separating from Mexico in 1836 (and previously ruled by Spain and France), the Republic of Texas existed on its own for 10 years before joining the United States in 1846. Texas was admitted into the Confederate States of America in March 1861.
