Directed By
David Platt

Plot[]

The detectives investigate the case of a mother and her ten-year-old daughter who were found brutally murdered in their apartment. Stabler and Beck discover a homeless man whom the daughter befriended at the park with clippings of SVU cases and label him a suspect. It is then discovered that the homeless man is Munch's uncle, Andrew, who is mentally ill. The detectives learn that evidence shows that a man, Brent Allen Banks, is responsible for the murders. But unfortunately, the squad's only evidence against Brent is thrown out and he is attempting to leave the jurisdiction. Andrew takes matters into his own hands and Stabler and Beck attempt to stop him.

Quotes[]

Beck: (looks at newspaper clippings) "Man wearing George Bush mask pulls girl into alley and sexually assaults her Halloween night."
Stabler: Or at least she assumed it was a mask. We never did catch that guy.

Beck: Maryellen had so many bite marks on her body, doctors couldn't count 'em all.
Brent: Well... one man's bite is another man's hickey.

Stabler: Just so you know... everybody loses it their first kid case.
Beck: I'll get used to it.
Stabler: When that happens, transfer out.

Andrew: Your honor, may I address the court?
Munch: Uncle Andrew, sit down.
Judge Bradley: Who's this man?
Andrew: This so-called attorney is telling outright lies. But you can see that, can't you?
Judge Bradley: Sir, you need to be quiet.
Munch: Your honor, I'm sorry. This man is not well.
Andrew: I hope you're not stupid enough to fall for this. She's trying to trick you. She's trying to cloud the issue.
Judge Bradley: Court officers. (gestures for Andrew to be removed from the courtroom)
Andrew: What is wrong with you? Why are you trying to set this monster free?
Judge Bradley: Remove this man.
Munch: Uncle Andrew, please. Come on.
Andrew: (to Brent) Retribution is coming, buddy. I know a detective who has big plans for you.
Judge Bradley: (banging gavel) Get him out of here before I throw him in jail.
Andrew: You can't bar me from there proceedings. Do you really not know what he's done?
Judge Bradley: That's enough, sir!
Andrew: He's the one that should be put to sleep like a rabid dog.
Judge Bradley: Order! Do you hear me?! Order! Get him out of here!
Andrew: If you don't euthanize him, you're either corrupt, or you're an idiot!

Stabler: Brent Allen Banks is free.
Beck: Free on bail?
Novak: Free to go and kill again free.
Munch: Don't tell me this had anything to do with my uncle's meltdown in court yesterday.
Novak: No, though that was special.

Novak: The bite mark evidence was thrown out.
Beck: Well, get it back in.
Stabler: Judge already ruled on it.
Novak: And because that evidence was our case, he threw out the indictment.
Beck: How could you let that happen?
Novak: I guess I suck.

Stabler: Andrew, what have you done?!
Andrew: We did it. We did good. We did it, Dani. We did good.

Munch: Dani, did you tell my uncle you were gonna kill Brent Allen Banks?
Beck: No.
Munch: He says you did.
Beck: Why would he say that?
Munch: I don't know. That's why I'm asking.

Background information and notes[]

  • A reference to the original Law & Order episode "Asylum", where the search of a lean-to in Central Park was thrown out as it was considered to be the perpetrator's home. Mike Logan and Phil Cerreta did not have a warrant.
  • John Munch is reunited with his uncle, Andrew Munch. Munch's father killed himself when Munch was 13.
  • Connie Nielsen's and Jerry Lewis's characters exchange flirty dialogue about meeting in Paris for lunch. Nielsen's real-life film debut was Jerry Lewis's French film Par Où T'es Rentré? On T'a Pas Vu Sortir in 1984.
  • Goof: When Stabler and Beck jump the subway turnstile at 38:00 they are clearly not filming in NYC. Also, the signage doesn't indicate which 86th St. station they are supposed to be in and the train never stops at the station.
