Viola Davis is an actress who guest-starred on Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Davis is the second cousin of actor Mike Colter, who is known for portraying the Marvel Comics character Luke Cage in Marvel's Luke Cage (2016–2018), The Defenders (2017), and Jessica Jones (2015; 2019), all set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and appears in the Law & Order franchise.
She recently played as Annalise Keating in the ABC drama series How to Get Away with Murder (with Liza Weil), which also had crossover episodes with the show Scandal: "Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself" and "Lahey v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania" (with Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn).
In 2020, Davis garnered universal acclaim for her performance in the titular role of the film adaptation of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (with Chadwick Boseman), for which she received an NAACP Image Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. With that nomination, Davis became the most nominated Black actress in the history of the Academy Awards, with four acting nominations, and the first Black actress to have been nominated for Best Actress more than once.
Her other film roles include the role of Amanda Waller in the films Suicide Squad (with Adam Beach and David Harbour), its standalone sequel The Suicide Squad (with Idris Elba), and Black Adam. In 2021, she appears as Liz Ingram in the Netfilx drama film The Unforgivable (with Vincent D'Onofrio and Jon Bernthal). She also starred in the TV show The First Lady (with Regina Taylor).
In 2018, Davis announced that she would star in Gina Prince-Bythewood's historial epic The Woman King (with John Boyega and Produced by Maria Bello), inspired by true events that took place within The Kingdom of Dahomey. The film will tell the story of Nanisca, the general of an all-female military unit, played by Davis, and her daughter Nawi, played by Thuso Mbedu. She will appear as Dr. Volumnia Gaul in the movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, it serves as a prequel to The Hunger Games film series.
